S’porean maid adds period blood to boss’s coffee

And in the latest news from the sunny island of Singapore, a domestic helper recently got in trouble for adding her menstrual fluids to her boss’s coffee. The 24-year-old Indonesian maid, who goes by the name Jumiah, had been working for her 38-year-old male boss for a year in the Choa Chu Kang neighborhood when the event occurred. She apparently tried to ask for a transfer after working for her employer for about one and a half months, but her request was denied. Jumiah apparently thought that adding period blood to his coffee would cause him to treat her better (not sure how that would work). Meanwhile, her boss will probably never be able to look at a cup of coffee in the same light.

The first question that came to mind was how the heck could he tell what was in the coffee? One disgusting hypothesis: the texture of the coffee was off and when he spat it out, he figured out what it was. Or perhaps, she simply told him.

Maid inherits $4 million from late boss

Sometimes hard work really does pay off.  After more than 20 years of service, a Filipina maid in Singapore has inherited $4 million from her late employer.  Using the pseudonym “Christine,” the 47-year old  insisted on remaining unnamed for fear that her newfound wealth could attract the attention of kidnappers and other money-hungry evildoers.  The inheritance from her late employer, Dr. Quek Kai Miew, included cash and a swanky apartment near Singapore’s downtown shopping district.

“It was heartbreaking for me as I saw more years with Dr. Quek than with my own mother,” “Christine” said. “I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money.”

In the US, having a maid is a sign of wealth and luxury.  But in Asia — particularly in cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong where it’s common for both parents to work — it’s typical for families to have live-in maids who take care of the kids.  Since I moved to the US, I often shy away from telling people that I grew up with a maid because I don’t want people to think I grew up as some kind of rich, spoiled brat.  But for me, growing up with a maid was like having a nanny whom I was super close with.  And even though she doesn’t work for us anymore, our maid who raised me since I was a little kid remains a big part of my childhood — I still stay in touch with her now.  Maybe it seems kind of crazy to most people, but I totally understand why “Christine” ended up with with four million bucks!

Juicy, meatier maids to serve your flubber fetish

It’s quite refreshing to see a maid cafe with chunkier servers, especially in Japan, a country swamped with stick-thin Japanese women. I remember asking a salesgirl how she managed to stay so thin, and she replied nonchalantly, “I don’t eat.” Right. Still, despite the overwhelming preference for skinny gals, there are those that want more junk in the trunk. Enter the Tokyo-based Pomeranian Maid Cafe, fully equipped with a minimum weight requirement for its wait staff. Ichigo, the woman and brains behind this cafe, used to work at a regular maid cafe and felt inferior because of her weight. She then decided to turn the heft to her advantage, and thus Pomeranian was born. I’m just a little disturbed that they used my dog Peanut’s breed as the name of the cafe.
