I’m officially on a search for SF’s Curry Up Now truck. . . has anyone tried it yet? I love taco trucks and have been wanting to try the various amalgamations of this American street food, such as Curry Up Now’s chicken tikka masala burrito or LA-based Kogi’s kimchi quesadilla.
Growing up in Asia, street food has a very special place in our hearts. Emily, Amy and I would hang out at Singapore’s “hawker stalls,” open air food courts where you can get cheap, delicious local food. I’ve always longed for that same street food culture here in the US. . . this might be the closest thing I’ll get to it.
I think the idea of combining the taco truck with Asian food is genius, but the Yelp reviews are mixed. Apparently, some people have complained that it’s not “authentic.” Well, isn’t that the point? Besides, inventing your own street food sounds pretty authentic to me!
Also, I love how these trucks use Twitter to keep their hungry followers up to date on where in the city they’re parked. Follow Curry Up Now here and Kogi here.

I haven’t tried either Kogi or Curry Up Now yet, but I had sisig tacos from HapaSF yesterday and Wednesday I had a Kalbi burrito from BBQKalbi, a Korean taco truck. Asian fusion food trucks for the win!!! Like you mentioned, neither would be considered “authentic,” but I sure had a couple of yummy lunches so I didn’t care. Moxsie in Palo Alto has been hosting “Street Eats” every Friday from 11:30-1:30pm bringing in a variety of food carts and trucks. El Porteno was there yesterday and I had a couple of their excellent empanadas.
@kaname650 – sounds like you’re a true foodie! we speak the same language
lol Suzanne. How can you say that you are a foodie and you are just now following the food truck movement?
It’s been around for a while now. I’ve been trying to reproduce some of their offerings. It’s a shame that they can’t really do this in Chicago because of a ban on street vending (read Rick Bayless’ thoughts on that). You guys/girls are so lucky that you can experience that everyday.
@Tim – I knoww, I’m behind! I never seem to catch the non-Mexican taco trucks for some reason!
The street food movement in L.A. is going strong, but be aware that street vending is under heavy attack there as well. Many restaurants in the area have lobbied to shut down street vending (as it creates a lot of competition), and the nomadic behavior of the catering trucks are a direct consequence of these actions.
Curry Up Now was at Moxsie’s Street Eats two Fridays ago but I couldn’t make it that day. Next time they are at Moxsie you should come on down to Palo Alto to check out the scene. My treat Suzanne!
@K. Chi that’s too bad
Some of my fondest memories of NY was the street vendors lol. I think it adds a unique flare to life in a city.
@Suzanne There’s a show that’s premiering soon on Food Network called The Great Food Truck Race. Looks like fun
@K. Chi – Sad! Why they gotta hate on the food trucks
@Kaname650 – Ooh, I think I’ll have to find an excuse to go down to Palo Alto on Fridays!
@Tim – Thanks for the heads up on that show. Sounds awesome!!
Palo Alto/Mt View Fobby Food Truck update! – Bulkalbi (@BBQKALBI or bbqkalbi.com) can usually be found at Microsoft Palo Alto, 3101 Park Blvd. on Wednesdays for lunch. You can also find them @ GTS parking lot (Dana & Hope) in Mt. View Friday & Saturday from 6:30 – 9:00pm. Also, another Korean-inspired food truck, MoGo BBQ (@MogoBBQ or mogobbq.com), has been seen at Fred’s Place, 2534 Old Middlefield Way in Mt. View, Wednesday evenings.
Two of my favorite here in Seattle: MARINATION (Korean-Hawaiian tacos and musubi) and Maximus Minimus (pork):
