I consider myself an expert on bento boxes. All my life, even up until high school, I was a proud bento box carrier. Keep in mind that I was bucking a trend back then. I did not attend a Japanese high school, and bento boxes were definitely not the norm in the Singaporean school I attended. I was already different enough with my middle and last name, but no, I had to stick out like a sore thumb with my hello kitty bento box, hello kitty school bag, and matching tumbler. Inside the box, my mom would pack rice balls and decorate them with all kinds of meats, veggies, and even hello kitty-shaped fishcakes. It’s tough being different from your peers during the growing years, but I count myself lucky to have been immersed in a variety of cultures. I guess I’ve always been an immigrant of sorts no matter where I am.
Check out some of my favorite shots from a gallery of bento box pictures; some seriously look too good to eat. They really bring back memories of my bento box days. Enjoy!
