Guide to bargaining like an Indian reveals all our secrets

by Emily Co on May 8, 2010

Fobs really take bargaining to the next level, perfecting it to an art. Take a look at this great bargaining guide by CNNGO.com. These are secrets revealed by Indian shopkeepers who anonymously agreed to let readers know what works and what pisses the hell out of them. Hmmm, this is interesting, I’ve never thought of using the “begging” strategy! It’s apparently a very effective one and entails lots of “please, please” and puppy dog eyes. Highly doable.

My Japanese mom drives a mean bargain, after all her years of living in Singapore. I remember when I was in a shop in China waiting for my mom while she was haggling, I heard the shopkeepers whisper to each other in Mandarin, “Hey, this Japanese lady is pretty damn good!” My mom and I did the whole “I’m going to walk out of the store right now so you better give me a good price” routine and the “Hey, the other stores had this dress for this price. Can’t you match that?” ploy.

Suffice to say, it worked. But, it does take quite a bit more time than I would like. It’s exhausting, but fobs usually consider it a task well worth the effort. Are you a haggler at heart as well?

I have to say I’ve used every single one of those bargaining tactics, except the “begging” one! Gotta try that one next time. Totally agree, though, it’s quite exhausting… but worth it.

We inherited it from our moms!
