Liu Zhu, 18, joined the male Chinese singing contest “Super Boy” dressed as a girl. In fact, he was so convincing that judge Annie Rose simply could not believe he was a boy and demanded an examination of his gender. She then called out for a “human-flesh” engine search to determine whether he was lying. Most Chinese netizens were quite supportive of Liu Zhu’s bravery to come out on Chinese national television and were angered by Rose’s rude reaction.
The singing contestant has always dressed that way ever since he was young, and his family is quite accepting of it.
“This way is more natural, if I purposely dress like a boy just for this contest, I think it would be very fake,” Zhu said. “I am indeed a boy, and I dress like this every day, but I think everyone has their own choice, their own way of life.”
I can’t believe that the conservative Communist nation did not censor out this portion. Perhaps this is a sign that China is becoming more liberal (albeit very, very slowly)?
