Jung Joon started the Coffin Academy in hopes of reducing Korea’s suicide rate, the highest among developed nations. Focusing on that tragic statistic, Jung’s Coffin Academy helps its customers appreciate life. The morbid founder forms groups of around 12 people and shuts them in coffins for ten minutes, leaving his customers shrouded by darkness as they hear sounds of nails pounding in. He figures it gives them a chance to flirt with death and think about “eternity.” They write goodbye letters and their own epitaphs, then attend their own funerals before being shut inside the coffin. The whole prep before the coffin lasts three to four hours.
