The white boy who speaks perfect Singlish

by Suzie Leung on December 12, 2009

Meet Tyler Creasman, 16, the blond-haired Tyler Creasmanwhite boy whose perfect Singlish (i.e. Singaporean pidgin English) will make you do a double take.  In fact, his Singlish has turned heads both locally and internationally—CNN and Asia One News have both written about him, and his YouTube skit from back when he was 13 has received over 136,220 views.

You must watch his interview on Singapore’s Shan and Rozz Show! (Sorry, they won’t let me embed.)

He talks about being the only white boy in school while living in Singapore and China, and how he learned Mandarin and Singlish as a result.  Despite the many expats who live in Singapore, few really understand Singlish, and I’ve never met anyone who speaks it fluently, intermixing English with Mandarin, Hokkien, and Malay.  I gotta say, this guy’s Singlish is pretty damn good.  Or as he would say, “wah lao damn power man!”

Still, I guess this is probably the equivalent of what people in China think of me when I start speaking in English, but somehow it seems so much funnier when it’s a white guy speaking Singlish.

Tyler should be offended that they’re questioning his language skills. he’s been living in Singapore for ten years! would another non-Singaporean asian get this sort of commendation?

well, partly because a non-singaporean asian can be easily mistaken for being a singaporean if they’re able to speak singlish. Partly also due to the fact that most expat kids don’t get as much exposure to the local accent as most people would put on a different accent to accommodate them. So it is commendable and interesting to be able to see someone speak singlish.
