What the heck is a FOB??

If I had a dollar for every time someone called me a fob, I’d be very rich fob.  I know some find the word offensive, but I like to think of it as a term of endearment. The acronym stands for Fresh Off The Boat or immigrants, particularly Asian ones, but I usually just treat it as an umbrella term for all immigrants, children of immigrants, children of children of immigrants … well you get my point.

Suzie and I aren’t your usual fobs. Having been in the American education system for most of our lives, we’re pretty westernized. Still, once in a while our fobbiness will inevitably shine through. For example, just today I found myself haggling with a cabbie over two dollars (I got my way in the end after threatening to take the train.)

After one crazy weekend in Chicago, Suzie and I brainstormed Absolutelyfobulous.com, a fun blog that will address our immigrant adventures in the U.S. as well as news from the motherland. Hollerrr.
